The Canadian Code of Concrete Design and the American Code for Concrete design provide two methods for designing concrete structures. These two different codes are internationally recognized.
To examine their differences, this report includes the design of a manmade dike to contain tanks filled with heavy water. The dike is a building that is below grade and it serves the purpose of withstand gravity and live loads, water and earth pressures and most importantly, seismic loads. The dike is approximately 15 meters deep below grade.
Load analysis will be performed using a computer model and the design is per the procedure in ACI 349 and CSA N291 for the purpose of examining their capacity prediction. Additionally, CSA N291, which refers to CSA A23.3-04, includes a simplified method for the design of one-way slabs and two-way slabs. The slab design will be used to calculate the required reinforcement and section size.
